Average training intensity can mean average percentage of one-repetition maximum, average RPE, average relative load, or a proprietary training-zone score. Before acting on the number, identify which definition the workout app uses.
An unexplained weekly average can look scientific while mixing exercises and effort signals that should not be combined.
Four meanings of intensity
Percentage of 1RM
Load intensity expresses the weight as a percentage of a known or estimated one-repetition maximum.
If your estimated bench-press 1RM is 100 kg, then 80 kg represents approximately 80% intensity for that lift.
This is useful for strength programming, but the estimate can change with the formula, exercise, repetition count and current readiness.
RPE
Rating of perceived exertion describes how difficult the set felt. In common resistance-training use:
- RPE 10 means no additional repetition was available;
- RPE 9 means roughly one repetition remained;
- RPE 8 means roughly two remained; and
- RPE 7 means roughly three remained.
RPE measures experienced effort, not simply bar weight.
RIR
Repetitions in reserve asks how many technically acceptable repetitions you believe remained at the end of the set. It describes proximity to failure and can be translated approximately to RPE.
The estimate is not perfectly accurate. Familiarity, exercise type, motivation and set duration can affect it.
Proprietary intensity scores
Some apps combine load, repetitions, RPE, exercise zones or historical baselines into a custom score. This can be useful, but only if the app explains the inputs and the score is compared with the user’s own history.
Why a weekly average can mislead
Imagine this week:
- squat: 4×5 at approximately 80% of 1RM;
- lateral raise: 4×15 near two RIR;
- leg curl: 3×12 near one RIR; and
- deadlift: 3×3 at approximately 85%.
An average percentage of 1RM cannot include every exercise unless the app has a credible estimated maximum for each one. An average RPE can include them, but it describes effort rather than relative load.
The dashboard must label the metric clearly.
Weighted versus unweighted averages
An unweighted average gives every recorded set equal importance. A weighted average may give more influence to repetitions, load, tonnage or exercise priority.
Neither is automatically correct.
- Set-weighted average RPE answers, “How hard did the average recorded set feel?”
- Rep-weighted load intensity answers, “At what relative load was the average repetition performed?”
- Tonnage-weighted intensity can become dominated by exercises that allow large absolute weights.
If the methodology is hidden, avoid making precise programming changes from a small difference such as 7.8 versus 8.0.
Warm-ups can distort intensity
Warm-up sets are intentionally lighter and easier. Including several ramping sets can lower the weekly average without changing the working program.
A useful app should distinguish warm-ups from working sets or explain whether they are excluded. The same principle applies to drop sets, assisted repetitions and bodyweight movements.
Average RPE is not average load
You can lift a light load to RPE 10 or a heavy load to RPE 7. Those sets have similar perceived-effort ratings but different mechanical and strength-specific demands.
For that reason, advanced review should keep two questions separate:
- How heavy was the training relative to current strength?
- How close did the sets come to the current limit?
Percentage of 1RM answers the first. RPE or RIR helps answer the second.
What a useful intensity dashboard should show
Look for:
- the definition of intensity;
- working sets separated from warm-ups;
- exercise-level views before global averages;
- the time window used;
- percentage-of-1RM and RPE kept distinct;
- missing-RPE handling;
- comparison with the same lift and program phase; and
- enough underlying data to explain a warning or recommendation.
An intensity heatmap can be useful for seeing heavy and light exposures across a block. It becomes less useful if different exercises are collapsed into one unexplained number.
How to use intensity for strength training
For a strength-focused block, track:
- relative load on the priority lifts;
- repetitions completed;
- RPE or RIR;
- estimated 1RM trend; and
- whether technique remains specific and repeatable.
Heavier loads generally produce greater improvements in maximal-strength tests because the training resembles the test. That does not mean every session should be maximally heavy.
How to use intensity for hypertrophy
Muscle growth can occur across a broad loading range when sets are sufficiently challenging. RPE or RIR may therefore be more informative than average percentage of 1RM for many isolation and machine exercises.
Avoid making every set an RPE 10. Training to failure creates more acute fatigue than stopping earlier, and failure is not required on every set to produce adaptation.
How intensity interacts with tonnage
Intensity and tonnage often move in opposite directions:
- A high-repetition block may produce high tonnage at moderate relative loads.
- A peaking block may use high relative loads but lower total tonnage.
Neither is automatically better. The block’s goal decides which pattern is appropriate. Read weekly tonnage versus training volume for the companion framework.
How intensity interacts with fatigue
Higher relative load is only one source of fatigue. Proximity to failure, number of sets, repetition duration, exercise selection, rest and training density also matter.
If the same workout’s average RPE rises while load and repetitions remain unchanged, that can be a useful fatigue signal. It is still not a diagnosis. Sleep, nutrition, illness, pain, stress and rating inconsistency can create the same pattern.

A practical weekly review
Ask:
- Did priority-lift relative intensity match the block’s goal?
- Did RPE remain inside the planned range?
- Did estimated strength or completed repetitions improve?
- Did tonnage change for a planned reason?
- Did performance recover by the next exposure?
Use the answers together. Do not chase a target average simply because the dashboard displays one.
