Pressing also trains the triceps and anterior delts, while rows and pulldowns involve the elbow flexors. Squats and hinges train several lower-body muscles at once. Do not count every indirect contribution as though it were another full direct set; that creates false precision.
Run the starting volume long enough to observe a trend before adding work. More sets may help in some contexts, but additional volume also carries time and fatigue costs, and the response varies among lifters. If performance is progressing and the target muscles are receiving a clear training stimulus, the program does not need extra sets merely to look advanced.
How hard should the sets be?
Most working sets start at one to two RIR: finish when you estimate that one or two clean repetitions remain. The main squat, press, and hinge variations stay around two RIR because a small error in effort estimation is less costly there than on a stable isolation exercise.
RIR is useful, but not perfectly precise. Accuracy tends to improve with experience and when sets are closer to failure. Review RPE and RIR calibration if your “two RIR” sets regularly turn into grinders or feel dramatically different week to week.

Progress with double progression
Use the rep range and RIR target together:
- Choose a load that puts all working sets near the bottom or middle of the range at the stated RIR.
- Over later sessions, add repetitions while keeping technique, range of motion, and rest reasonably consistent.
- Once every set reaches the top of the range at the target RIR, add the smallest practical load.
- Allow repetitions to return toward the lower end and repeat.
For example, bench press may progress from 80 kg for 8, 7, and 6 reps to 8, 8, and 8 reps over several exposures, all near two RIR. You would then make a small load increase rather than adding weight simply because the first set reached eight.

Remove one set from the exercise that contributes most to the problem, usually a later compound or redundant isolation movement. The first leg day here emphasizes squatting volume and includes a hinge. Lower adds knee-flexion work and uses fewer squat-pattern sets. Variation should solve a programming need, not exist for novelty.
Adding sets before establishing effort
Ten sets performed at an accidental five RIR are a different stimulus from ten sets near one to two RIR. Calibrate the existing work before deciding the volume is too low.
Changing exercises every week
Constant rotation makes progression difficult to interpret. Keep most exercises stable for a training block unless discomfort, equipment, or another clear constraint requires a change.
Ignoring the calendar
PPLUL is a five-day commitment. If you reliably train only three or four times, a different split may distribute your work more consistently. The best split is the one you can actually complete.
