Begin with an amount compatible with your current fitness. Place demanding cardio away from priority lower-body lifting when possible, keep steps reasonably consistent, and change one variable at a time. Mistake 5: interpreting strength loss as muscle loss
Strength is a skill expressed under current conditions. Lower carbohydrate availability, less body mass, altered leverages, poor sleep, and fatigue can lower a one-repetition maximum without proving that contractile tissue disappeared. If only one measure changes for one week, observe before reacting. If weight drops quickly and several recovery and performance measures worsen for multiple exposures, reduce stress: a smaller deficit, less nonessential volume, better sleep opportunity, or a temporary maintenance phase may be appropriate.
Maintenance breaks can help some people with hunger and adherence, but trials have not consistently shown superior body composition or resting metabolic rate compared with continuous restriction. They are a scheduling tool, not a metabolic repair ritual.
