How this protein estimate is formed

The output is deliberately a span rather than a single prescription. Body size sets the base; exercise, energy availability, and later life change the useful boundary.

Start with body weight

Each selected band is expressed in grams per kilogram, then multiplied by your weight. Imperial entries are converted internally, so changing units does not alter the physiological recommendation.

Match training demand

Endurance work increases amino-acid turnover, while lifting supplies a reason to favor a higher intake. Dieting lifters receive the most elevated bracket to support lean-tissue retention.

Distribute the total

The per-meal figure simply divides both ends evenly. Treat it as an organizing aid: a larger dinner and smaller breakfast can still add up to an appropriate day.

These ranges combine established adult minimums with sports-nutrition positions. They are planning boundaries, not diagnostic thresholds.

75 kg resistance trainee

Applying 1.4–2.0 grams per kilogram gives a flexible lifting range:

75 × 1.4–2.0 = 105–150 g/day

180 lb mixed-sport athlete

At 81.6 kg, the endurance and mixed bracket produces:

81.6 × 1.2–1.6 = 98–131 g/day

Use the midpoint as a simple starting line. Moving toward the upper edge may suit higher training loads, a calorie deficit, or a preference for protein-rich foods. Consistency matters more than hitting the same gram exactly every day.

How much protein should I eat each day?

A general adult baseline is about 0.83 to 1.0 grams per kilogram of body weight. Regular endurance or resistance exercise raises the useful range, while a calorie deficit combined with lifting may justify the upper end.

Is protein better calculated from kilograms or pounds?

Either unit gives the same recommendation when converted correctly. One kilogram equals about 2.205 pounds, so 1.6 grams per kilogram is approximately 0.73 grams per pound.

Does protein need increase after age 65?

Many expert groups suggest at least 1.0 to 1.2 grams per kilogram for healthy older adults, with more potentially useful during illness or regular training. Individual medical needs can differ.

How should I divide protein across meals?

A workable approach is to distribute the daily total across three to five eating occasions. The calculator shows an even split; real meals do not have to match perfectly.

Can I use the result with kidney disease or during pregnancy?

Do not rely on a general fitness calculator for those situations. Pregnancy, kidney disease, liver disease, eating disorders, and other clinical conditions call for advice from a qualified clinician or dietitian.

Evidence behind the boundaries

The adult population reference comes from the European Food Safety Authority dietary reference values for protein. Exercise bands are informed by the International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians of Canada, and ACSM joint position. The later-life floor reflects the PROT-AGE Study Group recommendations. Values shown here are a practical synthesis of those sources.
